IPL launches Rs 100-crore ad campaign

Each IPL squad must have minimum of four under-22 players

Mumbai:
Each Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise squad must have a minimum of 16 players per squad, according the rules of the Twenty20 tournament starting April 18.
A squad can have a maximum of eight foreign players, but it can pick a maximum of four in the playing XI, as per the rules announced by the IPL council a day ahead of the players' auction here.
Each of the eight squads will consist of a minimum of four under-22 players. These players must be under the age of 22 years April 1 of the relevant season.
The auction rules stipulate that each squad should have a minimum of four catchments area players -- the under-22 players and the Indian national team players if so qualified can be counted for purpose of this rule.

The catchments areas are defined by reference to a player's registration with his local cricket association. They are:
* Mumbai (catchments areas Mumbai, Maharashtra and Vidarbha)
* Bangalore (Karnataka, Goa and Services)
* Chennai (Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Railways)
* Kolkata (Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura and associate member Sikkim)
* Hyderabad (Hyderabad, Andhra and Orissa)
* Delhi (Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh)
* Mohali (Haryana, Punjab, Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir)
* Jaipur (Rajasthan, Gujarat, Baroda and Saurashtra)

The minimum salary for under-22 players is $20,000 per year. For other Ranji Trophy and non-auction players, it is $50,000 per year.
Each franchise must spend a total of at least $3.3m on players' fees for the 2008 season.

IPL Ground Rules

1. Team composition

• Total squad strength of 16 players plus one physio and a coach
• No more than 8 foreign players in the squad and at most 4 in the playing XI
• A minimum of 4 local players must be included in each team
• Not less than 4 players from the BCCI under-22 pool in each team

2. Player Auction

o Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag have been accorded the status of icons and are not open for bidding. Hence, they can witness the auction while the other players cannot.

o Bidding shall be among the rest of the 77 contracted players, who have been divided into eight categories. Categories A-D have a general distribution of top rung players. While E comprises wicketkeepers, F has all-rounders, G has specialist batsmen and H has specialist bowlers.

o Each of them have been assigned a base annual salary, which is the price on which open bidding is held to decide the final price. Teams are allowed a maximum spending limit of US$ 5 million for purchase of players.

o Under-22 players shall have a minimum annual salary of US$20,000 while for others it is US$50,000. Icons are paid 15% more than the highest paid player in the auction.

o Further, Cricket Australia has demanded that no team should buy more than 2 Cricket Australia centrally contracted players or more than 2 players from the same state association of Cricket Australia.

o All further trading of players in the next three years shall be carried out only in the months of February

o No foreign players may be bought prior to the auction

Chandigarh: The money generated through the Indian premier League will be used to improve cricketing infrastructure, former Indian captain MAK Pataudi said today. He said money will be used to improve infrastructure so that not only cricketers, but spectators too are able to take benefit of the improved facilities.
"Both the players and spectators should get best facilities," Pataudi told reporters here.
Pataudi, who is a member of the Indian Premier League committee, will be inaugurating a two-day IPL seminar for the curators and turf managers at PCA stadium in Mohali tomorrow.
When told that rebel ICL's second edition of Twenty20 had failed to attract crowds, Pataudi said this would not be the case with IPL.
"Our event is on a much bigger scale and enjoys the backing of BCCI and ICC," he said.

During the seminar the emphasis will be on to provide "sporting and lively pitches" to the IPL teams, BCCI Joint Secretary, M P Pandove, who is also PCA's secretary, said.

Mumbai Indians:sachin at press

Mumbai: Sobriety was the soul of Sachin Tendulkar’s answers after he named the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) franchise team as ‘Mumbai Indians’, posed for pictures in front of the crest resembling a Sudarshan chakra in motion with an outline of India and was named the captain of the team.

Tendulkar said Mumbai Indians was a well-balanced team, like most other teams in the DLF IPL Twenty20 competition to be played from April 18 to June 1.

The Mumbai Indians will sport ocean blue, to which neither the BCCI nor IPL has objected, as its official team colour.

“I will get an opportunity to lead, plan strategy and provide excitement to the fans. The IPL is going to be a super hit. It will be an evening out for the family. And, it’s a privilege for me to lead the Mumbai Indians,” he said.

Tendulkar said the Mumbai Indians would have a good combination of seniors and youngsters and would be looking forward to whip up support from the followers of the game in Mumbai.

“I want Mumbaikars to support Mumbai Indians. We will play in the right spirit.

“Thirty years ago, one-day cricket provided all the excitement, 30 years later I will be happy to say I was part of the inaugural IPL and how all the players enjoyed playing it.

“I wish all the franchise teams and players my good wishes and hopefully there will be plenty of entertainment. It provides plenty of spills and thrills in three hours. It’s a game for the 5-year-old and the 80-year-old, and students don’t have to bunk school or college,” he said.

Finally asked about his availability for the home series against South Africa, he said: “As far as I am concerned, I am fit.”

Stadia for IPL

Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Eden is perhaps one of the biggest landmarks of Indian cricket. Close to 100,000 people, roaring their approval can be a daunting challenge for many visiting sides.

The Chinnaswamy Stadium, in the heart of Bangalore, is another of the old guard of Indian cricket. It has however also changed with the times.

Just across the border from Chandigarh, the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali is perhaps one of the best-equipped stadia in India, and also one of the youngest, beginning serious cricket in 1992.

The Sawai Man Singh Stadium is not an exclusively cricket stadium, though it has gained fame because of the sport. The stadium is designed like the forts that surround the historic city of Jaipur.

Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
The MA Chidambaram Stadium shares a unique distinction with Eden. They hosted Test matches in the same series in 1934. The stadium has been associated with cricket since 1916.

ICL, IPL can co-exist: Lalit Modi (conversation bt latli modi and CNn-IBN reporter)

New Delhi: The BCCI vice president, whose brainchild IPL has created a stir in the cricketing world chatted exclusively with the cricketnext readers on Friday. Here is excerpt of the chat:

Arun: Hi sir, my question is will IPL work in the long run. With the iconic players and some of the international players are in their finishing stages. Plus who is your favourite to win the inagural tournament.
Lalit Modi: Hi everyone, franchisees will be able to change players as they go along. So the iconic players are there only for the first two years.
Praven: Hi Lalit, congrats on the IPL. But when we talk about free market, why can't ICL co-exist with IPL?
Lalit Modi:: They are co-existing. They are playing their games, we are running our show.
Sriram: Sir, India does not have enough representation on the ICC officials’ panel and not a single umpire from India, what are we doing about this?
Lalit Modi:: We now have Suresh Shastri on the panel and we hope that with the impetus that we are giving, with IPL also, in which we have 16 Indians, they will learn a lot and that will help us grow the number of people on the international panel.
Ronak Vora: Dear sir, are the stadiums of India ready to host the 2011 World Cup?
Lalit Modi:: We are working on them. The Wankhede stadium is being totally demolished and re-built. Other stadiums have already worked out their plans and will be ready well in time.
Ronak vora: Dear sir, I want to ask that will there be only T20 matches in IPL also in upcoming years? Or will there be a 50-over game and also 4-5 days test match?
Lalit Modi:: The IPL will only have Twenty20 matches.
George: Like European football clubs, do you think IPL and ICL and many more will come on the up coming days? Will BCCI ready to accept those kind of club based cricket tournaments?
Lalit Modi:: ICL is already existing. Others may do their own things but they are not part of the BCCI.
Sriram Natarajan: With so much revenue flowing in IPL, what are the steps BCCI is taking to improve the domestic circuit, ground facility around India. What are the plans to improve the standard of East and South Zone, which produce less players in the highest level?
Lalit Modi:: All the money that IPL and BCCI is earning is going back into infrastructure. East and South are also getting equal weightage as the rest of the country, which will surely result in improvement all around.
Tulasi Ram Reddy: Sir, I think there may be a crisis in Indian Test cricket, once senior pros like Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, Ganguly and Kumble were retired. How can we tackle this situation? I think Australian Test team is in similar crisis now.
Lalit Modi:: We now have the youngest team in the world. We have great talent that will take India to become the top team in the years to come.

The IPL is not international cricket, it is a domestic tournament

Runs and wickets at the Indian Premier League's Twenty20 competition will not gain official recognition, cricket's world governing body said Tuesday. The International Cricket Council (ICC) regards the multi-million-dollar IPL, promoted by the Indian board and featuring top stars from around the world, as a domestic Indian competition, a spokesman said. "The IPL is not international cricket, it is a domestic tournament," ICC spokesman James Fitzgerald told AFP when asked if players' performances will gain official recognition. "Therefore, the matches do not have Twenty20 international status."
The IPL is a city-based tournament with eight teams bought by franchises who selected their respective line-ups via auction in Mumbai last month. The tournament, which runs from April 18 to June 1, will mark the first time international cricketers will put aside their national allegiances to play for privately-owned teams. Players have received huge pay packets, starting from 100,000 dollars for the first year, to take part in the 44-day, 59-match extravaganza across cricket-mad India. In a sport where only a few top stars net more than a million dollars a year in fees and endorsements for their respective countries, the IPL has showered unprecedented riches. The Chennai franchise bought India's limited-overs captain Mahendra Dhoni for 1.5 million dollars, while Hyderabad snagged Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds for 1.35 million dollars.

IPL Chennai: Joginder Sharma Risks Career For IPL?

Is Joginder Sharma one of the stars of India’s Twenty20 world championship triumph has been diagnosed with a heel injury that might need surgery. The surgery could mean a 6 month lay-off for the player which could mean he will miss the IPL season. Joginder has refused surgery and sought second opinion.
Joginder Sharma has been snapped up by IPL Chennai for US$225,000 and risks not getting paid if he does not play in the tournament. Clearly a risk he is not willing to take. Instead the youngster might choose the option that could put his career at risk by playing in the IPL and doing some long-term damage to his already damaged heel.
